Can NPs Prescribe Weight Loss Medication in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado gives nurse practitioners full practice authority, which means an NP with full prescriptive authority can evaluate you, diagnose, and prescribe medication, including weight loss medication, without a physician signing off. Colorado requires newly licensed nurse practitioners to complete a period of mentored prescribing first; after that, they prescribe independently.

For you, that means you can book a weight loss evaluation directly with a nurse practitioner, without a referral, and the same clinician who evaluates you can write and manage your prescription.

Which weight loss medications an NP can prescribe

The medications most people ask about are the GLP-1s:

  • Semaglutide, sold as Wegovy for weight management (and as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes)
  • Tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound for weight management (and as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes)

Both are weekly injections. A Colorado nurse practitioner can prescribe either, along with other weight-management medications, when they're medically appropriate.

What a careful NP checks before prescribing

Being allowed to prescribe isn't the same as prescribing for everyone who asks. Before a GLP-1, a nurse practitioner should check:

  1. Eligibility. FDA labeling for weight management covers adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabetes.
  2. Reasons not to. These medications aren't prescribed during pregnancy or to anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. The labeling also warns about pancreatitis and gallbladder disease, so your history of both matters.
  3. Your other medications. Some diabetes medications, such as insulin, raise the risk of low blood sugar when combined with a GLP-1 and may need adjusting.
  4. Labs. A metabolic panel, A1c, lipids and thyroid function give a baseline and can turn up something else worth treating.

Then comes follow-up: starting at a low dose, increasing it gradually, and checking in on side effects and progress at regular visits.

Nurse practitioner or doctor?

For medical weight loss, what matters most is less the title than how the care is given: a real evaluation, labs, a prescription only when it's appropriate, and the same clinician following up. Nurse practitioners are trained in exactly that kind of ongoing management. Family nurse practitioners in particular are trained to care for adults across many conditions, which helps when weight is combined with blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar concerns.

How to check a nurse practitioner's credentials

  • License. Colorado's Division of Professions and Occupations, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), has a free online license lookup. It shows whether a nurse practitioner's license is active.
  • Board certification. The letters after a name tell you who certified them. FNP-C means a family nurse practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board; FNP-BC means one certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

At DalaHealth, every patient sees Maggie Smith, MSN, FNP-C, a board-certified family nurse practitioner with independent prescriptive authority in Colorado. Read about Maggie.
